Matt could not have asked for a better start to his career at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He qualified on the pole on the GP circuit in dry conditions, but the race started completely in the wet.
He swapped the lead with Gabby Chaves for the first few laps, but then pulled a gap which he extended as the track dried. By the checkered flag the track was totally dry and the tires were down to the cords.

He punched his way back through the field to eventually finish fourth and set the fastest lap of the race along the way.

This race came after a tough and draining week in which Matt’s famous grandfather Sir Jack Brabham passed away back in Australia.
Qualifying created its difficulties, but in the end he produced a time good enough to start third.
The drafting on the superspeedway saw many lead changes and an amazing battle up front. Matt led the most laps, including the fastest of the race.
He led into the last lap and looked as though he would clinch an emotional victory, but it wasn’t to be when Gabby Chaves drafted him to take the win by just 0.005 of a second in closest ever Indy Lights finish.

While having experience at IMS in Indy Lights, the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 was his second ever IndyCar start.
Matt qualified for the 500 in 27th place of the 33 car strong field.
It was an eventful race for Matt and PIRTEK Team Murray, where a broken wheel gun held up the #61 Chevrolet and the team worked through some understeer issues.
However, Matt was comfortable running in the top twenty and ran a race high of 14th before having to pit in the final stages of the race and ultimately finishing 22nd.
