Matt Brabham has begun his journey towards the 100th Indianapolis 500 through a range of activities representing PIRTEK Team Murray among the Verizon IndyCar Series field at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Brabham took part in numerous interviews with the IndyCar press corps as well as having his official medical to ensure he is fit to take part in the race. Following a rigorous training program that he’s been undertaking over recent weeks, he passed every requirement.
The entry of third generation Brabham into the Month of May under the PIRTEK Team Murray banner has created a great deal of interest both in Australia – and the USA where he was born. Matt – a regular in the IndyCar Series paddock thanks to his efforts in the Mazda Road to Indy program – was well received as he rubbed shoulders with his peers from IndyCar.
The effort is a true joint American and Australian effort – with the USA arm of PIRTEK – a Sydney founded company – joining forces as naming rights sponsor with Team Murray and its owner, Brett “Crusher” Murray, who is well known in the IndyCar paddock from his exploits in the late 90s/early 2000s with PacWest Racing and the Gold Coast IndyCar event.
Matt was also filmed for a number of vignettes that will form part of the IndyCar Series television programming in the leadup to and during the 500.
Following on from official festivities at the Speedway, he attended a dinner at the residence of Mark Miles – CEO of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway – and his wife, Helen.
The 500 ‘Rookie’ will also be involved in his first full IndyCar Driver’s Briefing on Wednesday as part of the pre-season gathering.
Brabham felt as though being involved in IndyCar Media Day was the next step in crystallizing the fact he is heading to the greatest race on the planet.
“The excitement is really building. There was a lot of talk among everyone about the 100th race, the connections involved and the history of the Indianapolis 500,” said Brabham – who will become just the third third generation racer to take part in the Indy 500. “That PIRTEK Team Murray will be there come May and we’ll be able to create our own history is something pretty special.
“The upgrades at the Speedway are coming along great and it will be stunning come the Month of May.
“It’s all starting to feel a little more real now that I was there – signing helmets with the other drivers and standing shoulder to shoulder with them, while also talking about our program and the history of my family at the Speedway.
“On the positive as well, I passed all of the physicals with flying colors, so it is good to know that I am fit enough to take on the challenges that May will bring!”
Matt’s Grandfather, Sir Jack Brabham started the Indy 500 on four occasions and his father Geoff competed in 10 of the 99 races held so far. In honor of Sir Jack’s first race at Indy in 1961, Matt will carry the #61 throughout the Month of May.
Brabham’s program lead up to May will include continuing his fitness program, simulator testing, and working with PIRTEK Team Murray’s technical partner, KV Racing Technology throughout each of its major milestones leading up to the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis on May 14.
Major sponsor, PIRTEK is using the program as the cornerstone of expansion for its unique Fluid Transfer Solutions franchise model in the US. PIRTEK is a worldwide leader in on-site hose replacement and prides itself on quality of service and a one-hour on-site ETA.
The team has also joined forces with the Chris Kyle Frog Foundation to involve and raise awareness for military, service veterans and first responders in the program. Taya Kyle – wife of famed American Sniper, Chris Kyle is the team’s Official Ambassador for the Memorial Day Weekend event.
